US adviser Massad Boulos says he held Sudan-Egypt talks on a peace track in New York
Published · Updated
What happened
Massad Boulos said he met in New York with Sudanese Foreign Minister Ali Youssef and Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty for trilateral talks on a path toward permanent peace in Sudan. The meeting was announced within the past 24 hours and indicates active US-Egypt coordination with Khartoum on Sudan ceasefire diplomacy.
Why it matters
The meeting adds a fresh diplomatic channel involving the United States and Egypt at a time when outside mediators are competing to shape terms for a Sudan ceasefire and political process. If this channel produces a joint statement, follow-on meeting, or draft framework, it could alter bargaining leverage, mediation formats, and expectations placed on Sudan's military and civilian interlocutors in the coming days.
US presidential adviser Massad Boulos said on September 21 that he held a trilateral meeting in New York with the foreign ministers of Sudan and Egypt on what he described as an urgent path toward permanent peace in Sudan. The announcement is a concrete diplomatic development because it places Washington and Cairo in direct coordination with Khartoum on a ceasefire-related channel. In the near term, the meeting could shape external pressure on Sudan's negotiating position, the role Cairo seeks in mediation, and whether follow-on talks produce a formal framework or public demands.
