Published · Updated
What happened
Prime Minister Takaichi met President Trump for 35 minutes in New York on September 23, 2026 Japan time. Nikkei reported that they confirmed alliance coordination and that Takaichi told Trump that a U.S.-China deal should not disadvantage Japan's security position before Trump's subsequent meeting with Xi Jinping.
Why it matters
The meeting inserts Japan's position directly into U.S.-China leader-level diplomacy on the same day that Washington engages Beijing. It offers an immediate signal on whether the United States is prepared to consult Japan before any understanding with China on security, trade, or regional military activity.
Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi held a 35-minute summit with U.S. President Donald Trump in New York on September 23, 2026 Japan time, immediately before Trump's meeting with Chinese leader Xi Jinping. According to Nikkei, the two leaders confirmed coordination within the Japan-U.S. alliance, and Takaichi conveyed that any U.S.-China understanding should not undercut Japan's security interests. The timing makes the meeting relevant for Tokyo's near-term alliance management and China policy as Washington engages Beijing at leader level.
