Presidency announces Operation Ópalo with 109 arrests for extortion and kidnapping
Published · Updated
What happened
The Presidency said Operation Ópalo led to 109 arrests in nine departments and four cities in actions against extortion and kidnapping networks. According to the announcement, those detained were linked to the Clan del Golfo, Autodefensas Conquistadoras de la Sierra, Los Costeños, and Los Satanás.
Why it matters
The operation gives the government a measurable enforcement result on two crime categories with direct effects on citizens and businesses. The next 24-72 hours will show whether prosecutors, police, and military units can sustain follow-on actions, formalize charges, and reduce retaliatory criminal activity in affected areas.
On November 7, Colombia's Presidency announced Operation Ópalo, a nationwide law-enforcement operation against extortion and kidnapping. The government said the operation produced 109 arrests across nine departments and four cities and targeted members of the Clan del Golfo, Autodefensas Conquistadoras de la Sierra, Los Costeños, and Los Satanás. The announcement creates an immediate test of whether the government can convert a one-day operational result into sustained pressure on high-visibility crime affecting households, transport, and commerce.
